The short answer

For 2027 Malibu has added a new RELAX layout with an electric drop-down bed in the rear, revealed at Caravan Salon Düsseldorf. The RELAX is Malibu's Fiat Ducato-based entry point into the brand, separate from the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter-based Genius, which only gains new interior finishes. It is a smart first Malibu if you want a flexible rear, no bed-making and can live with the payload cost of the lift mechanism.

Malibu has given its RELAX campervan a second layout for 2027, and the headline feature is an electric bed in the back that rises towards the roof when you are not sleeping on it. If you like the look of a Malibu but the Genius has always felt a step too far on price, this is the model meant to catch your eye. The 2026 RELAX was widely reported from around £52,000 in the UK, a very long way below a Genius. Here is what the new van is, what it is not, and whether it is the sensible way to buy into the brand.

First, a naming tangle worth untangling

You will see this new van described online as a 'Genius RELAX'. That muddle is worth clearing up first, because it changes which base vehicle you would be buying. There is no single model called Genius RELAX. Malibu, the sister brand to Carthago, sells two distinct campervan ranges, and both had news for 2027.

  • Malibu Genius: built on a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter chassis as standard, according to Malibu's own website, with an all-wheel-drive version also offered. For 2027 the change is new interior finishes. No new layouts.
  • Malibu RELAX: a separate, more affordable range built on the Fiat Ducato, as Practical Motorhome reports and UK dealer listings confirm. For 2027 it gains the new electric drop-down bed layout.

So when the 2027 reveal coverage from Caravan Salon in Düsseldorf talks about an 'entry-level yet premium campervan' with a drop-down bed, it means the RELAX, not the Genius. Malibu's own page sums the range up as 'two layouts, one Malibu RELAX', which fits with a drop-down bed model joining the original design. We will cover both ranges below, because the question of whether the RELAX is the smart way in only makes sense once you know what the Genius gives you for the extra money.

What is actually new for 2027

Malibu showed its 2027 motorhomes and campervans at Caravan Salon in Düsseldorf, the big late-summer show where most German brands reveal the next model year. On the campervan side the changes were modest but meaningful.

RELAX: a new electric drop-down bed layout

The original RELAX is built around a large L-shaped lounge and a spacious rear sleeping area, which is how Malibu itself describes it on its social channels. The new model keeps the RELAX concept but replaces the fixed rear arrangement with a bed that lifts electrically towards the roof. By day that frees the back of the van; at night you bring the bed down and it is ready made. Practical Motorhome describes it simply as an extra Relax model with a drop-down bed in the back, extending what it calls a premium-price range.

Genius: new interior finishes

The Genius carries on structurally unchanged for 2027. The news is cosmetic: fresh furniture finishes and trim. If you were waiting for a new Genius floorplan, this is not the year. If you already like the Genius layouts, the refresh just gives you more choice in how it looks inside.

What is still unconfirmed

At the time of writing I have not seen a published 2027 UK price, or length and weight figures specific to the new drop-down bed layout. For context, the 2026 RELAX was widely reported from around £52,000 in its basic form. Treat that as a 2026 starting figure, not a 2027 price: model-year changes, options and the new bed hardware could all move it. Dealers will have the 2027 UK price list before long, and it is worth waiting for the real number rather than guessing.

Genius and RELAX side by side

This is the comparison that matters if you are weighing 'the smart way in' against 'the one I actually want'.

The Genius in numbers

  • Base vehicle: Mercedes-Benz Sprinter as standard, per Malibu, with a quoted wheelbase of 3,665 mm.
  • Lengths: a UK dealer lists the Genius at 5.93 m standard and 6.41 m in the longer version, the extra 480 mm going into living space.
  • Bed: lying length of up to 2 m in the longer van.
  • Storage: around 1,400 litres is the figure quoted for the 6.41 m van.
  • Drivetrain options: four-wheel drive is available. The Genius Performance 4x4 pairs a 2.0-litre, 190 hp diesel with a nine-speed automatic gearbox.
  • UK price: the Performance 4x4 641 LE has been quoted from £128,040. The two-wheel-drive Genius sits below that, but it remains a substantially more expensive van than the RELAX.

The RELAX in numbers

  • Base vehicle: Fiat Ducato, on the 3.5-tonne 35 Light chassis according to a UK dealer listing from River Motorhomes.
  • Engine: the same listing gives a 2.2-litre diesel with 103 kW (140 hp) as the base engine.
  • Length: 6,355 mm overall per that dealer, only around 5 cm shorter than the longer 6.41 m Genius.
  • Gearbox: the Fiat Ducato is offered with a nine-speed automatic, so ask the dealer whether it can be specified on the RELAX you want and what it adds to the price.
  • Price: the 2026 RELAX was widely reported from around £52,000. The 2027 UK price, including for the new layout, is still to be confirmed.
  • Recognition: Practical Motorhome named the Relax 640 LE R best value in its awards.

The RELAX in plain terms

The RELAX is Malibu's way of offering the brand's build and finish at a lower starting point, using the Fiat Ducato as the donor van rather than the Sprinter. Malibu markets it as 'the premium van', and that word premium is doing real work: this is the cheaper Malibu, not a cheap campervan. What you give up versus the Genius is the Mercedes base and the four-wheel-drive option. What you keep is the Malibu approach to construction and detail, in a van of very similar length.

Think of the RELAX as the door into the brand, not the door into the bargain basement. It is Malibu's most accessible van, and at around £52,000 for the 2026 model it is still priced like a premium campervan, just a long way below a Genius.

How an electric drop-down bed works in a panel van

If you have only seen drop-down beds in coachbuilt motorhomes, where they float above a lounge, the panel-van version works a little differently. Here the bed lives in the rear of the van, where a fixed transverse bed would normally sit above a garage.

  1. By night, the bed sits at a normal sleeping height. You climb in, the mattress is permanently made up, and there is storage underneath, just as with a fixed bed.
  2. By day, press a switch and the whole bed base rises on electric lifts towards the roof. The space beneath becomes tall enough for bikes standing upright, boards, a wet wardrobe of kit, or simply a clear floor.
  3. In between, most systems let you stop the bed at any height, so you can set it low for a daytime nap or high for loading.

The advantage over a fixed bed is obvious: the garage height is no longer dictated by the bed height. The advantage over a lounge that converts into a bed is time and effort, with no cushions to rearrange twice a day. That is why this type of layout has become popular across the panel-van market, and Malibu's 2027 reveal coverage makes clear the new RELAX is aimed squarely at that demand.

The trade-offs the brochure will not dwell on

A drop-down bed is a genuinely good idea for some buyers and a costly gimmick for others. These are the points to work through honestly.

Weight and payload

Motors, a steel frame, lift columns and control gear all add kilos compared with a simple fixed bed base. In a Ducato-based campervan plated at 3,500 kg gross, every kilo spent on hardware is a kilo you cannot spend on water, gas, food, bikes and people. Ask the dealer for the mass in running order of the exact specification you want, options included, and subtract it from the plated maximum. If the remaining payload looks thin, ask about a weight upgrade. Remember the UK licence rule: a standard category B licence covers vehicles up to 3,500 kg. Above that you need C1, which drivers who passed before 1 January 1997 usually have and later drivers usually do not.

Headroom, both ways

With the bed up, you are walking beneath a sandwich of bed base and mattress tucked against the roof, so check you can stand under it. With the bed down, check the gap between mattress and ceiling. Sitting up in bed to read is a small pleasure that a low ceiling quickly spoils.

Bed size and orientation

A Ducato panel van is about 2.05 m wide outside and noticeably less inside between the walls, which is why transverse beds in these vans are often tight for anyone much over 1.8 m tall unless the maker has used widened side pods. I have not seen confirmed dimensions for the new RELAX bed, so take nothing on trust: lie on it at full stretch, with your partner if there will be two of you.

Power, noise and the flat-battery question

The lift runs from the 12 V leisure system. The draw is brief, so it is not a drain in normal use, but ask two things: how long does a full lift take, and what happens if the leisure battery is flat? A manual override is normal on good systems. Confirm this one has it, and ask to see it used.

Moving parts and the long term

Anything that moves can wear or need adjustment. Ask how the bed mechanism is covered under the habitation warranty, and whether adjustment is a dealer job or something an owner can do with a hex key.

What 'entry-level' means in Malibu language

It is easy to hear 'entry-level' and picture a stripped-out van with thin cushions. That is not what this is. The RELAX is entry-level within Malibu's own catalogue. At a reported 2026 starting price of around £52,000 it is not a budget campervan, but it sits well below the Genius, and Practical Motorhome thought the value strong enough to name the Relax 640 LE R best value in its awards. What you should expect is Malibu's furniture construction, finish quality and attention to small details, with the Mercedes base and four-wheel drive reserved for the Genius.

That positioning has a practical consequence for resale. Premium German brands tend to hold value well in the UK used market, partly because supply is modest. A RELAX bought sensibly should not be a financial mistake, provided you order a specification the next buyer will also want. In a drop-down bed van that usually means a decent payload upgrade and the heating and electrical options that make year-round use realistic.

Who the drop-down layout suits, and who should pick the other RELAX

Pick the drop-down bed if

  • You carry bikes, boards or bulky gear and want them inside, standing up, with the doors locked.
  • You want a fixed, made-up bed without a fixed garage height.
  • You are two people who use the rear of the van as a workshop, changing room or dog space by day.

Pick the original L-shaped lounge RELAX if

  • Sitting in comfort matters more than carrying kit. The original layout's big lounge is its reason to exist.
  • You want the simpler, lighter mechanical specification and more payload left for the things you bring.
  • You would rather spend the difference on a weight upgrade, solar or a better leisure battery.

Pick the Genius instead if

  • You specifically want the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter base and, in the Performance version, the four-wheel-drive system.
  • You want the Genius's well-documented specification, including a bed lying length of up to 2 m and around 1,400 litres of storage in the 6.41 m van.
  • The budget can genuinely stretch to a van that starts at around £128,040 in Performance 4x4 form, or somewhat less for the two-wheel-drive version.

Before you order: a short checklist

  1. Confirm the exact model year and base vehicle on the order form. It should say Fiat Ducato for a RELAX and Mercedes-Benz Sprinter for a Genius.
  2. Get the mass in running order and payload for your chosen specification in writing, then add up your realistic load.
  3. If you want an automatic, ask whether it can be specified on the RELAX, what it costs and what it does to the payload.
  4. Lie on the bed. Check lying length, width and the ceiling gap with the bed lowered.
  5. Stand under the raised bed and walk the rear of the van with the bed fully up.
  6. Watch the bed cycle, time it, and ask to see the manual override.
  7. Ask how the bed mechanism is covered by the warranty and who services it in the UK.
  8. Ask for the 2027 UK price list rather than relying on the reported 2026 figure or anything you read online, including this article.

So, is it the smart way into a Malibu?

For a lot of buyers, yes. The new RELAX layout gives you a Malibu badge, Malibu finish and a fixed bed that gets out of the way when you need the rear of the van for something else. With the 2026 RELAX reported from around £52,000 against £128,040 for a Genius Performance 4x4, the gap is huge, and the RELAX is barely shorter. That is a sensible proposition, with two conditions. First, the payload sums have to work once the lift hardware and your real kit are added, and you need to know which licence category you hold if a weight upgrade pushes the van past 3,500 kg. Second, the bed has to fit you. A drop-down bed that is too short for you is just an expensive shelf.

If what you really want is the Sprinter base or four-wheel drive, the RELAX will not scratch that itch, and the Genius remains the van to save for. But if the Genius was always out of reach and you have been waiting for a Malibu you could justify, the 2027 RELAX with the electric bed is the most realistic route there. Just buy it for what the empty space beneath the bed does for your trips, not for the pleasure of pressing the button.

Common questions

Is the Malibu Genius RELAX a real model?

No. The Genius and the RELAX are two separate Malibu campervan ranges. For 2027 the RELAX gains a new electric drop-down bed layout, while the Genius only receives new interior finishes.

What base vehicle is the Malibu RELAX built on?

Practical Motorhome reports the RELAX range is Fiat Ducato-based. The Malibu Genius, by contrast, uses a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter chassis as standard according to Malibu's own website.

How does an electric drop-down bed work in a panel van campervan?

The rear bed sits on electric lifts. At night it rests at normal sleeping height above a garage; by day it rises towards the roof, freeing tall space underneath for bikes, boards or gear, with no cushions to rearrange.

What are the main drawbacks of a drop-down bed?

The mechanism adds weight and eats into payload, you lose some headroom under the raised bed, the bed must fit you in a narrow panel van, and you depend on 12 V power, so check for a manual override and how the warranty covers the moving parts.

How much does the 2027 Malibu RELAX cost in the UK?

UK pricing for the new drop-down bed layout had not been published when this was written. For context, the Genius Performance 4x4 has been quoted by a UK dealer from around £128,040, and the RELAX sits below the Genius in Malibu's range.

Do I need a special licence to drive a Malibu RELAX?

If the van is plated at 3,500 kg a standard category B car licence is enough. If it is uprated above 3,500 kg you need C1, which most drivers who passed before 1 January 1997 hold automatically and later drivers usually have to take a test for.

The reachable bit

The camper you fall for is rarely the one you can afford. That gap is the whole reason Campervan.win exists. Right now we’re giving away the Sunlight Vanlife, worth around £65,000, and closing that gap is the point: capped entries so the odds stay honest, £10 a ticket, a maximum of five per person, £500 to a UK charity from every full draw, the winner picked by a public randomness beacon anyone can re-check, and one person driving away in the van itself.
